Takin' Care of Business 2

Please check your email for the virtual event link from no-reply@events.ringcentral.com

Join SPD on Tuesday, September 24th at 7:00PM ET for our next installment of Takin’ Care of Business!
Roy Torres, Nikolle and José Reyes, and Carla Frank will participate in a virtual panel discussion,
moderated by Trevett McCandliss, about understanding your client.

Socrates once said, “Know thyself.” If he were alive today, he might say, “Know thy client.” Selling a service is harder than selling a product. A service is intangible, which makes it harder for clients to buy. Therefore, understanding your client (the internal CD) is crucial when starting your business. The better you understand your clients, the better you can serve them. During our virtual event the panelists will discuss:

  • Peter Drucker talks about the five essential questions every business must answer (what’s your mission, vision, etc.). Of those 5, one is this: who is your primary customer? We want to think we’re here to serve everybody, but we’re not. For our freelance audience, how have you thought about who you are here to serve? How have you focused on that over time?

  • How do large agencies and internal teams select external vendors, such as freelance designers or small agencies?

  • What gets lost in translation between external and internal teams, and how can the freelancer best position themselves for success?

  • As a freelancer, have you considered your offerings to those clients? A “design agency” can sometimes be a catch-all for everything. How have you considered filtering out what you won’t do and clarifying what you are here to do to make yourself more attractive to the internal CD?

  • How does knowing your customer help you find and meet them at their pain point?

  • Best practices, advice and tips

Roy Torres is an award-winning creative director based in Atlanta. Previously VP of Brand Creative at La Colombe Coffee Roasters, spearheading marketing alongside the CMO and CEO. La Colombe's in-house creative team services 32 national cafes, LaColombe.com, wholesale & hospitality brand partners. Most recently, the brand was acquired by Chobani for $900m. Prior to that and also starting Stella & Chewy's (Natural Pet Food) first in-house creative agency Offleash, Roy spent over 15 years working at ad agencies across the US, Europe, and Australia, producing national and global award-winning work for Toyota, Land Rover, Amazon Alexa, Airheads Candy, Brooks Running, Hasbro, and Converse. His work has been awarded and featured at Cannes, D&AD, The One Show, Andy's, London International and Fast Company.

From Metaleap Creative, a design agency, Nikolle Reyes is Principal & Managing Director. José Reyes is the Founder and Executive Creative Director. Metaleap works with Fortune 500 companies, nonprofits, startups and national magazines to captivate customers, shape culture, and expand audiences.

Carla Frank is the Founder and Creative Director of Carla Frank Creative and Co., a boutique design studio specializing in editorial design and content development.

Trevett McCandliss is a Partner and Creative Director at McCandliss and Campbell who specialize in innovative typography and creative fashion photography.

Inventing History with Phil Toledano and Santiago Lyon in partnership with Fotografiska

Join SPD in partnership with Fotografiska on Wednesday, May 29th for our in-person speaker event: Inventing History featuring artist and photographer Phil Toledano in conversation with Santiago Lyon, Head of Advocacy and Education for the Content Authenticity Initiative for Phil’s book launch: Another America.

Truth in America has been slowly dying over the last decade. The country is consumed with conspiracy theories. For millions, facts are a choice. For millions, history is a choice. The arrival of AI is the next stage in the demise of truth. We can recreate the world as it never was. For every conspiracy theory, there can be visual proof. Convincing evidence that makes the lie real.

Another America takes this idea, and creates a history that never existed. A world complete with people, events, and disasters, couched in the veracity of the past. Did this really happen? Is this real history? The images are simultaneously familiar and strange, much like the world in which we live.

Phil Toledano was born in 1968 in London, to a French Moroccan mother and an American father. He grew up in London and Casablanca. He received a BA in English literature from Tufts University in Boston. Toledano considers himself a conceptual artist: Everything starts with an idea, and the idea determines the execution. Consequently, his work varies in medium, ranging from photography to installation, sculpture, painting and video.

Santiago Lyon is Head of Advocacy and Education for the Content Authenticity Initiative (CAI), an Adobe-led community of over 2,500 media and technology partners working to create an open-source industry standard for digital media provenance and history.

Ever wonder exactly how one gets from point A to point B in a career? If so, join celebrity photographer Stephanie Diani as she has a wide-ranging and potentially funny conversation with award-winning scenic designer Derek McLane about his time spent living in an unheated loft in Long Island City, and how his creative fires kept him warm.

Join them for a 45 minute chat about the how, the why, the lessons learned and the mistakes made, the successes, and the motivations to keep going, followed by mingling. As Stephanie says, this is “No perfect social media version of life, this is the real messy-ass deal.”

Ticket sales will be donated to The New Group, where Derek McLane serves as board chairman.

The New Group, led by founding Artistic Director Scott Elliott and Executive Director Adam Bernstein, is an award-winning, artist-driven company with a commitment to developing and producing powerful, contemporary theater. While constantly evolving, we strive to maintain an ensemble approach to all our work and an articulated style of emotional immediacy in our acting and productions. In this way, we seek a theater that is adventurous, stimulating and most importantly “now”, a true forum for the present culture.

From Film to Flour and Back Again with Norman Jean Roy

Join SPD on Tuesday, May 7th for our in-person speaker event: From Film to Flour and Back Again with Norman Jean Roy, moderated by Editor/Writer Holly Hughes.

Legendary photographer Norman Jean Roy spent decades creating some of the most iconic portraiture of our time. After 30 years in the industry, Norman put down his camera, moved upstate and began his second act, baking. He quickly went from amateur to professional creating award winning breads and pastries with a storefront that consistently had a line out the door. Like his photography, his culinary treats were extraordinary. After tremendous success, Norman shut the shop's doors for the final time and has returned to his original passion of photography. Rejuvenated and inspired, Norman Jean Roy is back on the call sheet.

Expressive Typography with
Trevett McCandliss and Nancy Campbell
Saturday, October 1, 10:00AM - 4:00PM ET

Deepen your understanding of typography by learning to create and modify your letterforms for conceptual and expressive purposes. Use your new skills in print or on the web, for headlines, logos, motion projects, or wherever unique and exciting typography is required. The sky’s the limit!

The ideal candidate for this workshop will have a reasonable degree of fluency with the basic principles of graphic design and typography. Access to the Adobe Creative Suite with a working knowledge of InDesign and/or Illustrator during the workshop is required. Zoom meeting link will be provided via email a day before the workshop.

Recommended Supply List:

  1. Any smooth, thick paper that is at least 9 x 12 inches. They personally use 11 x 14 inches and recommend Strathmore Bristol which can be purchased here.

  2. Any black ink in a bottle. They use Higgins. It has a dropper top that they use to draw with sometimes. Higgins has a few blacks but any of them are fine. You can purchase it here.

  3.  Any watercolor, acrylic round sable brushes. They use 2, 4, and 6 sizes, depending on the effect they are going for. You can purchase a set of brushes here.

  4. Fine point black Sharpie markers. You can purchase it here.

  5. You will also need a cup of water to clean your brush.

Does the word "redesign" give you night terrors? Don’t sweat it, Fast Company Creative Director Mike Schnaidt will help channel your creativity and get laser focused on how to meet your redesign goals. In this 6 hour course, you'll learn the importance of a good brainstorm, and how to translate a detailed mood board into a cohesive design system in record time. You’ll leave with a prototype and the confidence to go into work Monday and wow your EIC with your new found redesign courage.

Attendees for this workshop should be fluent with graphic design and typography, and have some great fonts already loaded on their computer. Access to Adobe InDesign and Photoshop during the workshop is required. Zoom meeting link will be provided via email a day before the workshop.

Dynamic Digital Covers with Chuck Kerr
Saturday, October 29, 1:00PM - 7:00PM ET

A great magazine cover leaps off the newsstand and forces the reader to stop in their tracks. Social media feeds are a different kind of newsstand, and digital magazine covers are a unique opportunity to stop the scroll and help your brand break through the noise.

This workshop will take you behind the scenes of some award-winning digital covers—from concept to execution—and help you gain insight into how you can combine traditional print cover design and art direction with video, motion graphics, and other techniques.

Attendees for this workshop should have a reasonable degree of fluency with the basic principles of graphic design and typography; basic motion design experience is a plus. Access to Adobe Creative Suite, specifically After Effects, InDesign, and Photoshop during the workshop is required. Zoom meeting link will be provided via email a day before the workshop.
