Join SPD in partnership with Fotografiska on Wednesday, May 29th for our in-person speaker event: Inventing History featuring artist and photographer Phil Toledano in conversation with Santiago Lyon, Head of Advocacy and Education for the Content Authenticity Initiative for Phil’s book launch: Another America.
Truth in America has been slowly dying over the last decade. The country is consumed with conspiracy theories. For millions, facts are a choice. For millions, history is a choice. The arrival of AI is the next stage in the demise of truth. We can recreate the world as it never was. For every conspiracy theory, there can be visual proof. Convincing evidence that makes the lie real.
Another America takes this idea, and creates a history that never existed. A world complete with people, events, and disasters, couched in the veracity of the past. Did this really happen? Is this real history? The images are simultaneously familiar and strange, much like the world in which we live.
Phil Toledano was born in 1968 in London, to a French Moroccan mother and an American father. He grew up in London and Casablanca. He received a BA in English literature from Tufts University in Boston. Toledano considers himself a conceptual artist: Everything starts with an idea, and the idea determines the execution. Consequently, his work varies in medium, ranging from photography to installation, sculpture, painting and video.
Santiago Lyon is Head of Advocacy and Education for the Content Authenticity Initiative (CAI), an Adobe-led community of over 2,500 media and technology partners working to create an open-source industry standard for digital media provenance and history.
