Job Description: Washingtonian is seeking an imaginative, collaborative, and relentlessly ambitious staff photographer for its award-winning creative department. For more than 55 years, the award-winning city magazine for the Washington, DC area has been a home for groundbreaking feature writing, essential service journalism, and arresting visual storytelling. We're looking for someone who has the ability and experience to photograph a wide variety of assignments such as, but not limited to: studio tabletop set ups, and both formal and environmental portraits. This is a full time position that allows for outside freelancing and is located in Washington D.C.

Job Requirements:

Qualifications:

  • 3+ years of photography experience with a strong background in studio lighting

  • The ideal candidate will be a creative visual storyteller with a strong technical background in studio lighting used for portraiture, food and/or still life

  • Proficiency in Adobe Photoshop with a strong understanding of color matching and retouching techniques

  • Motivated, self-starter who is detail oriented

  • Has the ability to interact professionally, effectively communicate with, and direct all kinds of people from a variety of professions

  • High degree of creativity and editorial judgment; bold, modern, and playful style and the ability to adapt tone and style to different projects

Responsibilities:

  • The photographer will be responsible for producing multiple stories per month on a variety of topics, including both long-form stories as well as quicker pieces. Shoots will happen both on location and/or in the Washingtonian office

  • Assignments may vary in nature from editorial to marketing and events, all falling under the umbrella of Washingtonian Media Inc.

  • Must be able to work both independently and/or in conjunction with a reporter and to use solid editorial judgment on all images

  • The photographer will work with the Photo Director and Creative Director to ensure the visual standards of the brand are met

  • Capture, apply metadata, caption, upload and organize images on the servers

  • Work cooperatively as a team member under tight deadlines

  • Required to perform duties where necessary during extended hours, and occasionally for special circumstances during evenings and weekends

  • Other duties as assigned by Photo Director and Creative Director
