Job Requirements: POLITICO is seeking a skilled news designer to lead the production of our newspaper as part of the POLITICO Visuals Desk. Published three times a week, the paper is delivered directly to the halls of Congress and offices all around D.C.
This is a remote temporary position lasting from mid-October/ November 2021-August 2022.
What You'll Need:
Demonstrated a mastery of InDesign (especially for designing print products)
Experience budgeting and designing a daily newspaper in a fast-paced news environment
Excellent news judgment when it comes to news stories, photo selection and headline writing
Proficiency in using the Adobe Suite (InDesign, Photoshop), content management systems
Experience working in close partnership with copy editors, story editors, advertising departments and printing operations
Voracious appetite for news and ability to target stories — beyond those pitched by editors — that should be included in any given issue
Ability to prioritize multiple tasks and work on a daily deadline
A keen design eye and willingness to contribute to visual storytelling across the newsroom on non paper days (Thursday and Friday of each week)
The right candidate for this job will stay calm under deadline pressure, working with the team to bring the most important news of the day to Congress. Beyond traditional news stories, this position will sometimes be responsible for pulling syndicated cartoons for the newspaper and then building those selections out for the online weekly cartoon gallery.
In addition to leading the newspaper, the ideal candidate would handle several other visuals team projects on non-newspaper days. These projects are a mix of templated tasks and illustrations that require creative thinking and case-by-case problem solving. These projects include designing the newsletter image for The Friday Cover, researching and assembling the newsletter image for The Sitdown, designing the occasional thumbnail for the weekly Punchlines video, and more broadly contributing photo research, design ideas and working with the larger Visuals desk to deliver striking visual journalism to our readers.
