Job Description: Alta Journal is seeking a senior designer for its award-winning creative department. The ideal candidate will work alongside our creative director and editorial team to translate stories into pages for our quarterly print journal and posts for the related website.

We are looking for someone who has experience in editorial magazine and online design. You will be a key player in evolving the Alta brand, ensuring visual consistency across print and digital channels while staying on top of current design trends. If you love collaborative brainstorming and have the hands-on design and production skills to execute big ideas, we’d love to hear from you.

You must be comfortable working remotely. Strong preference is for the candidate to be in either the San Francisco or Los Angeles areas.

Job Requirements:

In this position, you will:

  • Design and art direct covers and inside pages for magazine printing, with four issues expected this year.

  • Commission illustrators and photographers.

  • Coordinate projects for both digital and print.

  • Design and format for altaonline.com, email newsletters, and social channels, as needed.

Requirements:

  • At least five years of professional experience as a designer in magazine design.

  • A portfolio of work that demonstrates excellence in art directing illustrations, typography, and photography.

  • Strong multitasking, organizational and communication skills.

  • Ability to work independently in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment.

  • Strong working knowledge of design software: InDesign, Photoshop, and Illustrator.

  • Expert proficiency working with InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator, and InCopy.

  • Experience using collaborative tools like Dropbox, Slack, and online content management systems.

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

  • Demonstrated ability to design for digital stories and social media.

  • A history of designing and developing alternate story forms.

  • Effective at working in a team environment.
