Job Description:

  • The PrePress and Print Production Contractor works closely with the Design Director and the editorial team to ensure the accurate and timely production of the print editions of California magazine, published by the Cal Alumni Association. This position has full responsibility over ensuring that all files adhere to our design standards, are high quality, and ready for printing.

  • The PrePress and Print Production Contractor will be contracted during the two months of production leading up to press. We print our magazine twice a year. Press is scheduled in late May for the Spring/Summer issue, and in mid November for the Fall/Winter issue. Interested candidates must have availability and flexibility in their work schedule during these times, with the ability to participate in weekly virtual editorial meetings.

  • The PrePress and Print Production Contactor is the main point of contact between the Design Director and our printing partner, Quad, during the production process. The Contractor works with Cal Alumni Association’s marketing and business development departments to check and upload all partnership ads, in-house ads, and in-house content for inclusion in the magazine. In addition, the position coordinates with our sister organization, University Development and Alumni Relations, to upload their section in the magazine.

  • Work can be done remotely in the United States. The Cal Alumni Association is located in Berkeley, CA which is in the pacific time zone. California adjusts annually for daylight savings time. We set and communicate meetings and deadlines based on our Berkeley time zone.

  • The Cal Alumni Association seeks contractors whose previous experience has prepared them to contribute to our commitment to diversity, inclusion, and belonging. Job Requirements:

  • Manages the preflight/prepress processes for all ads, inserts, and editorial content

  • Creates template-based layouts for several back-of-book pages

  • Creates page (InDesign) files to place ads and inserts

  • Creates organized folders on Box or Google Drive for ads and insert pages

  • Creates the map for each issue

  • Pours final editorial copy as needed to determine word count

  • Circulates final layouts to the Design Director and editorial team for approval

  • Makes edits on the InDesign files and maintains the files on the server

  • Circulates proofs to the Design Director and editorial team for approval

  • Processes all images, places final images in InDesign files, and uploads them to Quad

  • Uploads press ready PDFs to Quad

  • Creates and exports text files of final editorial content and the cover for web publishing

  • Creates issue PDFs for web publishing, awards, and promotion

  • Assists with image research as needed

  • Other duties as assigned

Job Description: Atlanta magazine, one of the country’s premier city and regional magazines, seeks a Design Director who will be responsible for the overall look of the Atlanta magazine brand—focusing on print and, to a lesser extent, on digital and social media. SUMMARY
At Magnolia, the Associate Art Director is part of the Magnolia Journal editorial team and is responsible for all art involved from story conception through final publication in collaboration with partnerships. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Uphold Magnolia’s manifesto and values

  • Collaborate with team in brainstorming & developing stories for each Magnolia Journal issue, including generating type/design inspiration, developing layout sketches, and proposing freelancers

  • Maintain ownership over story layouts from beginning of design phase through final approval

  • Execute edits at the direction of the Creative Director, working with team to gather necessary assets needed for each story

  • Proficiently execute any photography edits in Photoshop

  • Provide on set direction for photography in collaboration with Deputy Photo Director

  • Prepare all approved files for production process with publishing company, including communicating imaging and color correction notes

  • Maintain a library of completed issues and work with Magnolia’s creative team for assets needed for seasonal advertising and campaigns

The Society is looking for an Assistant Art Director to support the Science News Magazine Group team. Science News, a biweekly magazine and website, is seeking a hardworking and talented assistant art director for a full-time, on-site position.

To perform the job successfully, this candidate must have publishing design experience. The Assistant Art Director will primarily work with the Art Director, Graphic Designer and editors to create layouts and other supporting visual materials to share compelling storytelling for Science News magazine, website, and electronic editions. The Assistant Art Director may also perform artistic and production work for the marketing team when needed.

We value strong analytical and interpersonal skills, and the ability to contribute to a fast-paced environment as an individual and as part of a team.

This position will report to the Chief Design Officer and the Design Director. This is an exempt position.

Qualifications

  • Work with editors to research and prepare art and graphics for articles in multiple formats.

  • Strong design and layout skills, particularly in publication and/or long format design

  • Excellent typography and type design

  • Good eye for tasteful, considered design.

  • Knowledge and practice of web optimization on all platforms

  • Flexible, adaptable, and comfortable working in a newsroom environment and on deadline

  • Experience in art directing illustrations and proficiency at researching stock art sites.

  • Photo editing skills including color correction.
