Designer, Texas Monthly
/Job Description: Love magazine design, and also have a passion for storytelling across multiple platforms? Then Texas Monthly might be the place for you. We’re searching for an ambitious designer to join our editorial team. This designer would become a member of a deeply collaborative art department whose work has been honored by such organizations as the American Society of Magazine Editors and the Society of Publication Designers. We’re seeking someone who will thrive in an environment in which they might, in any given week, design stories for the print magazine, work on branding for a podcast, and help create and commission illustrations and graphics for web stories.
This full-time staff position is based in Austin, Texas, and requires working out of our downtown office at least two days a week. Job Requirements:
Job responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
Art directing and designing stories across all platforms.
Collaborating on a broad range of projects beyond print and web stories, including podcast and video graphics
Commissioning and creating original artwork, including illustrations, infographics, icons, and animations.
Identifying new talent and seeking out diverse voices to contribute to TM.
Assisting in photo research and assigning
Maintaining brand standards across all digital properties including websites, social channels, newsletters, and videos
Successful candidates will possess the following abilities:
A strong portfolio of work in a variety of mediums
Excellent typography, layout, and conceptual skills
Demonstrated experience commissioning original artwork
Thorough understanding of digital production processes and capabilities
Expert knowledge of Adobe Creative Suite
Proficiency in WordPress, K4, and Figma
Strong organizational and time-management skills
Ability to work collaboratively and communicate clearly with other designers and editors
Illustration and motion graphics skills are a plus
Required Qualifications:
A bachelor’s degree in visual arts, journalism, or a related field
At least three years of editorial design experience

Texas Monthly will review applications on a rolling basis and may reach out to some candidates before that date, but all applications received by the deadline will be reviewed. Promising candidates will have an initial interview with the HR manager and one or two members of the art department. From there, some candidates will be asked to complete a concise design test. TM will then select two or three finalists for a final round of interviews with TM leadership and other members of the editorial department.
