Job Description: New York Media, owner of New York Magazine, nymag.com, The Cut, Vulture, Grub Street, Intelligencer, and Strategist, is seeking a Designer to join our in-house brand and marketing studio. We are looking for someone to:

-Help conceptualize, design, and create for a variety of platforms and formats including branding, event graphics, ad campaigns, internal collateral, promotional materials, presentations and custom content stories

-Play a lead role in determining the look and feel of any outfacing products that support New York and its web verticals

-Be a strategic problem solver and think from a pre- and post-sale point of view by playing a role in pitching new ideas to executing concepts into strong visuals

-Other design responsibilities may include creation of: infographics, motion graphics, animating visuals and typography for web and video, digital ad units and other unique one-offs

-Other responsibilities as assigned by manager or supervisor

Job Requirements:

-Bachelor’s degree 
-5+ years in design role in an agency, publisher or client setting
-Experience working in branding or with branded content is a big plus
-Strong design foundation and understanding of the principles of typography and layout
-Well-versed in motion design and after effects
-Solid understanding of HTML5/CSS capabilities and limitations as well as responsive design
-Proficiency in the Adobe Creative Suite, particularly After Effects and Photoshop
-Experience working with a variety of brands, including entertainment, beauty/fashion, culture, politics and food
-Retouching experience a plus
-Must be comfortable in fast-paced environment and able to solve problems quickly
-Must be detail-driven and able to manage the production of their work

Photo Editor, The Knot Magazine

Job Description: 
ABOUT THE ROLE AND OUR TEAM:
The Knot Magazine seeks a talented, creative and enthusiastic Photo Editor to join our team. You're a match if you are resourceful, have a strong work ethic, are able to juggle a large volume of projects in a fast-paced environment & work within tight deadlines. This individual should be comfortable working independently and in a team identifying what works visually in the print and wedding industry. You will report directly to the Art Director and work closely with the art and editorial teams. This position is an in-office role based our of our NYC office; no remote.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Independently photo edit and research images for magazine production (original content articles and Real Weddings articles)

  • Work closely with the Real Weddings team to understand trends in wedding photography, style, and brand identity

  • Assist with fashion photo shoot production, model casting and administrative tasks

  • Produce and pick up styled shoots within quarterly magazine deadlines

  • Manage daily workflow of magazine files including tracking and releasing of hi-res images to production, as well as archival of final art

  • Contributes to other editorial department creative needs or projects, as needed

  • Collaborate with editorial team on story development and visual concepts

  • Responsible for caption and credit information in layouts

  • Manage stock photography accounts and ensure proper usage of images

  • Knowledgeable of contracts, usage rights, photo licensing and copyright laws

Art Director, The Lily

Job Description: The Washington Post’s Emerging News Products team has an immediate opening for an Art Director on The Lily. This role requires a well-rounded visual journalist who can design, illustrate and art direct across The Lily’s platforms.

Job Requirements: We are looking for someone who understands The Lily’s brand and is excited to design within our established visual voice. This person must be highly organized and able to produce quality work in a fast-paced environment. On any given day, you will be expected to design or illustrate, share images for several stories, plan Instagram posts and work on special projects.

Art directors on The Lily work closely with the rest of our team, so a collaborative spirit is a must. For example, you may work with our video editor to create graphics for a series, or our multiplatform editors to design our twice-weekly newsletter, Lily Lines. We are looking for a designer who is excited to contribute ideas. In the past, our designers’ ideas have included a mural for International Women’s Day and a zine for The Lily’s first anniversary.

The right candidate has experience with HTML, CSS, Javascript and Adobe After Effects. Proficiency in Photoshop, InDesign and Illustrator is expected. Candidates should have a portfolio demonstrating a strong use of typography, photo-editing skills, the creation of original illustration and experience directing illustrators.
