Visuals Editor, POLITICO

Job Description: POLITICO's Visuals Team is looking for a skilled and curious collaborator to play a key role in art direction and visual storytelling at Politico. As a member of the Visuals Team you'll help us pinpoint visual storytelling opportunities early, be it for an in-house illustration, a graphic element, or an opportunity to bring in a freelance illustrator. You'll have a passion for design problem-solving, where no task is too small, and ideas about how to better leverage existing design patterns — or develop new ones — for our daily work. Each week you'll work on many of our most-read stories leveraging your knowledge of scale, typography and color to create strong visual hierarchy.

This role lies at the intersection of many teams, collaborating closely with reporting and strategy partners across the newsroom to leverage art direction to tell the story of how legal weed destroyed a counter culture icon, or partner with our photo editors and interactive news team to tell the story of Biden's first 100 days. You'll also deploy your skills as a clear and diplomatic communicator, working with artists and their representatives across the globe to ensure we produce high quality editorial art across our platforms.

We want a partner to help us reimagine ways into stories like our summer book's project, and leverage your art direction and design skills to inform visual aesthetic for our guide to Biden's cabinet contenders. In short, we think deeply about design and also have a lot of fun.

Job Requirements:

  • Fluency in visual standards: image quality, resolution, neatness, precision, typography, hierarchy, use of white space and color

  • Experience working across teams to craft compelling stories and storytelling formats and an eagerness to participate in team brainstorms around storytelling approach or form

  • Demonstrated ability to identify story candidates for an illustrated or visual approach and ability to clearly articulate your ideas in meetings and to key stakeholders

  • Strong portfolio that highlight art directing illustrations with freelancers

  • Ability to navigate multiple design projects in tandem and work well across teams

  • An orientation toward problem solving where no design task is too small

  • Ability to produce photo illustrations for quicker turnarounds

  • Experience producing a digital ‘art plan’ with visual variety that tells a compelling story

  • Comfortable taking design direction on deadline while balancing the overall aesthetic of the approach

  • Experience with basic photo research

  • Mastery of the Adobe Creative suite

  • Eagerness to learn or developed skills in html and css
