Job Description: This role directly reports to the Director of Photography. The Photo Editor, UK will create day-to-day photo/visual solutions to support the digital and print editorial staff to maintain the visual standards of the brand. The UK photo editor is responsible for a proportion of the shoots for the online and print editions of WIRED, especially (but not limited to) front-of-book photography for the UK print edition. The UK Photo Editor will work with editors and writers across multiple time zones to conceive editorial photography and manage shoots from photographer selection to production to editing and post-production. The position will also oversee photography for UK and European events and promotions and be an integral part of the team setting the creative direction and use of photography across all WIRED platforms.

Job Requirements:

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Execute photo research for both the web and print editions of WIRED.

  • Research, source, license, and edit photos for Wired.co.uk.

  • Produce all FOB shoots, including Gear section.

  • Archive, label, and organize images on our image database.

  • Obtain image references for illustrators.

  • Review photographer portfolios and continuously search for new talent and potential photo essays, for both UK & US print and online.

  • Responsible for overseeing the photo and art budgets for the UK.

  • Working with legal to negotiate contracts and agreements for contributors

Desired Skills and Qualifications:

  • 3+ years of work experience in photography, media or relevant fields.

  • Experienced photo editor with a strong portfolio of work across print and digital editorial photography.

  • Proficient in Photoshop.

  • Demonstrated experience commissioning and supervising complex photoshoots to exacting requirements under tight time constraints and within budget.

  • An extensive database of photography talent and track record of finding and recruiting new talent.

  • Thorough knowledge of artist rights and copyright law.

  • Knowledge of digital and social content.

  • Highly organized, detail oriented, and excellent communication skills.

  • Can creatively translate the needs of the brands and client into high quality output through a detailed understanding of the requirements of the platforms.

  • Proficient in Photoshop.

BA or BFA in photography or studio art preferred.
