Photo Editor, This Old House Ventures
/Job Description: This Old House Ventures is seeking an experienced Photo Editor to join our design team and work on digital and print projects for all of This Old House’s platforms and groups, including, but not limited to: marketing, This Old House magazine, ThisOldHouse.com, This Old House and Ask This Old House TV. This position reports to the Creative Director, works across the organization, and is based in our Stamford, CT headquarters.
The ideal candidate is creative, conceptual, innovative and collaborative, with a fluid and nimble approach to assigning and gathering imagery. This hands-on role involves assigning and producing original photography for TOH editorial, digital, marketing, TV, branded content and social, working across all platforms. Our photo editor must be a self-starter, able to work individually, be very detail-oriented, able to juggle multiple projects at the same time, and is experienced with desktop publishing systems such as Photoshop, Illustrator, and InDesign. Our photo editor is a key player in every visual aspect of the brand, from assigning, gathering and creating imagery to working with the art and production teams to ensure proper reproduction and crediting. There is opportunity for taking in-house and onsite photographs for various TOH platforms, as well as working with the digital and design teams to create still and motion graphics based on original TOH photography. This position will be responsible for leading the development of a company-wide DAM and archiving system, as well as managing and processing photography contracts and invoices while working with a tight budget. Primary Duties and Responsibilities:
• Assign and produce original photography for TOH editorial, digital, marketing, TV, branded content and social, working across all platforms.
• Edit and curate images from photo shoots and collaborate with art directors and editors on visual presentations on all platforms.
• Manage credits and proofs.
• Play an active role in the constant pursuit of visual innovation across all platforms, with an emphasis on new and emerging platforms.
• Pitch visually innovative and effective approaches to stories.
• Strategize new ways to leverage visual assets and develop smart solutions for workflow.
• Evaluate ways to source imagery in low-cost and non-traditional manners beyond staged shoots.
• Work with the TV production team, social media vendors, etc. to take better advantage of photo opportunities in the field.
• Collaborate with editors, creative director, marketing director and TV producers on story development, brand extensions, and visual concepts.
• Image support and research for print, digital and social media content in required file types, aspect ratios and file sizes, as well as image support and research for brand projects across all platforms.
• Manage freelance photographers.
• Work with art and production teams to ensure proper workflow of images and correct quality and resolution for reproduction.
• Manage photo budgets and invoices. Negotiate fees, secure photo rights and contracts for print, digital, marketing, advertising, TV, social, and digital.
• Coordinate and organize and maintain databases of digital image files, including images from TV shoots, social media, etc. Work with the managing editor and creative director to develop, implement, and manage a DAM.
• Opportunity to take in-house and onsite photographs for various TOH platforms as needed. Work with the digital and design teams to create still and motion graphics based on original TOH photography.
• May require some light traveling that is generally local.
Job Requirements:
• At least 5 years’ experience as a photo editor working on multiple media platforms.
• Working knowledge of Photoshop, Acrobat, PowerPoint, InDesign and photo organizational software.
• The ability to assign and produce photo shoots, on deadline and on budget.
• Familiarity with trends in digital and editorial photography and image manipulation.
• Ability to work efficiently, with a love of detail and a strong familiarity with production processes.
• Capacity to quickly learn new software and equipment.
• A self-starter who is able to work collaboratively.
• Essential: A joy and love of visual storytelling, photography, and image creation, a hunger to learn, and a dedication to building and maintaining a strong brand.
• Interest in the home improvement space a plus.
