The Hollywood Reporter (THR) is seeking a Photo Director to join our art department. The ideal candidate is creative, innovative and collaborative, with a passion to produce beautiful, award-winning visual content. The role will oversee the brand’s aesthetic across all platforms including video, digital, social and editorial. Assignments will range from celebrity portraiture to entertainment breaking news coverage — from studio sets to film festival lounges. You will already possess a deep rolodex of cutting-edge photographers and you will possess excellent communication skills and know how to talk through editorial ideas in a lively, collaborative environment. This role will be based in Los Angeles.
Job Requirements:
The Role:
• Management experience with budgets, photo shoots, video shoots, deadlines and leading teams
• Expertise with photo research, syndication and contract negotiation with photographers and their agents/agencies
• Working with the entire edit team to come up with unique approaches to storytelling
• Work with the creative director to present cover options to the EIC
• Mentoring and coaching a photo and video department staff while providing a creative environment conducive to taking risks and advancing the brand in a competitive space
• Strong network of industry connections including photographers, videographers, agents, reps, stylists, hair & makeup artists, locations and prop houses
• Provide art direction to emerging and veteran photographers — either prior to, or on-set during a shoot
• Experienced with desktop publishing systems such as K4, Photoshop, Illustrator, and InDesign
• Assigning and producing original photography and video for editorial, digital, marketing, branded content and social, working across all platforms
• Create and manage activations at film festival lounges
• Developing coverage strategies for major events such as the Oscars
• Work with the on-site videographers at shoots to obtain the best behind the scenes shots and interviews.
• Work closely with talent and publicists in pre-shoot planning and at the photo shoot.
