Job Description
Under the direction of a Creative Director, the assistant art director works in a fast-paced studio environment that is committed to effectively and efficiently developing communications through inspired and aligned branding in the ASU ecosystem. The individual will manage, prepare and coordinate the implementation of a variety of best-in-class art direction and graphic design assets in preparation of various print and digital media. The director will be well-versed in the visual language and traditions of Arizona State University audiences. This position will develop a strong working relationship with staff from across the university, leading photographers, students and marketing collaborators in the strategies and tactics of photography and design for the ASU brand. The assistant art director will provide conceptual leadership on creative projects from starting point through testing and execution. This leader will collaborate to develop and align design, photography and video assignments under their leadership to ensure that campaigns read as unified executions of a brand platform-aligned ASU communications.

Essential Duties

  • The individual in this position will collaborate on teams to develop ideas and efficient design systems to produce large bodies of photography and design work.

  • This position is responsible for all phases of photography and graphic design from concept to completion including the creation of websites, html emails, sales materials, brochures, magazines, multimedia presentations, billboards, digital ads, etc.

  • The assistant art director will work closely with brand strategy and management leads and will play a critical role in reporting progress, establishing priorities, coordinating with photographers working on brand photography and design projects, and training others on ASU brand standards.

  • In this position, the assistant art director will be required to understand and adhere to a variety of University brand standards, FERPA policies and compliance policies.

  • Proactive approach to work throughout the course of a year, anticipating and proposing projects based on past experience and team records of prior campaigns.

  • Work will be completed in a highly collaborative and dynamic environment that is subject to tight deadlines which often includes conflicting priorities, which the assistant art director will navigate and lead through to on-time creative delivery.

Design

  • Experience applying human-centered, insights-driven design process.

  • Demonstrated expertise with Adobe Creative Suite (especially Photoshop, Lightroom, InDesign, Illustrator, XD and others).

  • Evidence of effective communication visual, verbal and written skills.

  • Knowledge and skill applying photo manipulation tools, including light retouching of photography.

  • Leads the development of repeatable, scalable and sustainable design solutions and tools for the team to implement across campaigns, aligning for maximum impact in the market.

  • Works closely with supervisor and leadership to review campaign theme to develop photo assignment direction; prepares visual materials to guide direction and aligns with photographers and subjects in advance of all photoshoots. Designs layout of primary materials that use high end photography, determining placement of lead content, supporting graphics/photos.

  • Prepares photo checklists and targets, including mood boards and recommended lighting techniques. Attends scheduled photo assignments to deliver pre-approved direction; directs assignments to achieve desired visual images and b-roll video.

  • Supports video team in making on-campaign materials and coordinating photo and video coverage of the same assignments.

Leadership and project management

  • Produces digital and print projects to meet production deadlines. Monitors work in progress and upon completion.

  • Leads constructive critique in office and in project communications.

  • Supervises, trains, and evaluates assigned staff, developing talent and skill in all team members using available teaching materials and campus resources.

  • The candidate must possess exceptional interpersonal skills and provide guidance to colleagues in need of effective photography and design solutions.

  • This position schedules, participates and collaboratively facilitates planning meetings, review sessions, photo direction and brainstorming.

  • Develops, maintains and implements department policies and procedures.

  • May supervise and evaluate the work of others, including student, freelance and staff photographers.

Minimum Qualifications: Bachelor's degree in Graphic Arts or a field appropriate to the area of assignment and four (4) years of related experience working on both a PC and MAC platform; OR, eight (8) years of related experience OR, Any equivalent combination of education and/or experience from which comparable knowledge, skills and abilities have been achieved.

Working Environment

  • Activities are performed in an environmentally controlled office setting subject to extended periods of sitting, keyboarding and manipulating a computer mouse; required to stand for varying lengths of time and walk moderate distances to perform work.

  • Frequent bending, reaching, lifting, pushing and pulling up to 25 pounds.

  • Regular activities require ability to quickly change priorities, which may include and/or are subject to resolution of conflicts.

  • Ability to clearly communicate to perform essential functions.
