POSITION SUMMARY
Quanta Magazine seeks an accomplished art director to guide the magazine's visual style and identity, and to lead the art staff in creating, commissioning and editing illustrations, photography and other science and math visualizations. Successful candidates will be a dynamic leader and communicator, a digitally savvy designer with impeccable editorial judgment and a diehard advocate for the highest standards in visual journalism and scientific accuracy.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS/RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Collaborate with the art, web and editorial staffs to plan, design and produce story packages.

  • Oversee concepting, hiring, directing and licensing visuals for features, news articles, explainers, columns and interviews.

  • Art direction and design work for other visual projects, including infographics, standalone visual features, social media assets and videos.

  • Manage and supervise the art staff.

  • Create original illustrations and other visual assets as needed.

  • Research, assign and edit photo shoots.

  • Prepare visuals for publication, primarily for web (includes color correction and cleanup, file conversion, resizing, etc.).

  • Learn the WordPress content management system in order to supervise web production and layout, in addition to ongoing visual design improvements to the website.

  • Develop and maintain visual style guide and other internal documents.

Job Requirements:

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • At least five years of experience as an art director or a visual journalist in a leadership capacity.

  • Demonstrated experience of design principles, color theory and typography, and extensive knowledge of current design trends.

  • Expertise in Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator, with at least some familiarity with other relevant digital editing tools (such as Figma, InDesign, After Effects, Premiere, WordPress).

  • Experience collaborating with journalists, illustrators, designers, photographers and video and graphics editors, explaining design decisions, and receiving and giving feedback.

  • Must be a proactive, fast learner who can research deeply and problem solve, especially when confronted with unfamiliar tasks or subject matter.

  • A track record of deep engagement with science, digital media and visual journalism.

  • Must be detail-oriented and organized, and an excellent communicator who thrives in a collaborative setting.
