Art Director, Newsletters, The New York Times

Job Description: The New York Times is looking for an Art Director to commission illustrations and create visual solutions for some of our most widely-read newsletters.

Newsletters are an important platform for sharing the expert and deeply reported journalism that distinguishes The New York Times. You will help shape the visual expression of digital editorial products, including On Tech and the Saturday edition of The Morning. We are looking for a creative thinker and hands-on problem-solver who excels in a fast-paced environment. You will report to the features design director.

What you’ll do:

  • Thoughtfully pair writers /subjects with visual approaches that enhance the experience of our readers.

  • Assign and art-direct illustrations with short turnaround times.

  • Provide visual guidance for new offerings and build design treatments that provide identity.

  • Cultivate a diverse network of visual artists.

  • Collaborate effectively with editors, writers, photo editors and fellow designers.

  • Deliver work that is anchored in an understanding of the medium and our principals of excellence, clarity and quality.

  • Stay up-to-date on the broader landscape of editorial newsletters.

  • Thrive in a multi-project, multi-paced environment.

  • Effectively communicate your ideas and discuss visual solutions to a broad and varied group of colleagues.

Job Requirements:
What you’ll bring:

  • At least 5 years of design/illustration experience.

  • A solid understanding of illustration, with knowledge of a diverse range of artists working in different mediums, including motion.

  • A strong portfolio that shows conceptual thinking and a solid understanding of design.

  • A keen interest in journalism and in the publishing industry at large.

  • Extreme attention to detail and excellent written and oral communication skills.

  • A positive attitude and the ability to work in both independently and with a team.

  • Fluency with design tools including InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop. (Figma and After Effects are a plus).
