Associate Visuals Editor, Dwell

Job Description: The Associate Visuals Editor creates day-to-day photo/visual content to support the editorial and marketing teams. This role is responsible for photo research and licensing, preparing photos for publication on Dwell.com, on social-media platforms, and in email. They also commission some photography. The Associate Visuals Editor will also assist in conceptualizing and enhancing Dwell’s video program. This role reports to the Photo Director.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct photo research, including editing, sourcing, licensing, and editing photos for digital and print stories.

  • Maintain Dwell's high standards for photography across our platforms.

  • Prepare photos, captions, and credits for publication.

  • Create composites for Web and social media.

  • Commission and produce photography for Dwell's digital platforms.

  • Call-in, log, and organize products for large production shoots.

  • Fulfill some administrative duties, such as preparing photos for award submissions and sending out magazines to contributors.

  • Review photographer portfolios and continuously search for new talent.

  • Work with photographers, agencies, and vendors to set budgets, negotiate contracts, and process invoices in a timely manner.

  • Additional duties as required, or as assigned by the Photo Director.

Job Requirements:

  • 3+ years of work experience in photography, media, or another relevant field.

  • Knowledge of digital and social best practices and an exceptional eye for scroll-stopping images.

  • Highly organized, detail oriented, and excellent communication skills.

  • Ability to contribute to editorial decisions and support the development of visual stories across all platforms.

  • Knowledge of photography, great Photoshop skills, and a general familiarity with photo rights.

  • Knowledge of and interest in home design and other topics covered by Dwell.

  • Experience as a photographer and/or video editor are a plus.

Graphics Editor, Quanta Magazine

Job Description:

POSITION SUMMARY
Quanta Magazine seeks an accomplished graphics editor to direct and develop science infographics, data visualizations, interactive graphics and other visual explainers. In addition to working closely with the magazine's editors, art director and reporters in conceptualizing, researching and designing graphics in support of Quanta's articles, the graphics editor will lead standalone visual explainer projects, some of which may involve assigning and overseeing the work of freelance artists, photographers and interactive designers.

The ideal candidate will be an experienced, creative, detail-oriented science visualizer and graphics editor with impeccable news judgment and exceptionally high standards in journalistic ethics and scientific accuracy. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS/RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Collaborate with the editorial, art and web staffs to research, design and create science infographics, charts, maps, and data visualizations to illustrate Quanta's articles.

  • Collaborate with interactive designers to create interactive infographics and data visualizations.

  • Lead larger standalone visual explainer projects, some of which may involve assigning and overseeing the work of freelance artists, animators, and interactive designers.

  • Procuring permissions and adapting graphics from science journals.

  • Prepare graphics, including file formatting, for web (desktop and mobile) publication.

  • Maintaining and monitoring Quanta's infographics style, aesthetic and scientific standards.

  • Collaborate with the Art Director to create and maintain a graphics style guide.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Experience:

  • At least 5 years' experience as a graphics editor, data visualizer or interactive designer, preferably at or for an established newspaper, magazine or news website, with a proven track record of conceiving, researching and creating impactful visual science explainers.

  • Must be detail-oriented and highly organized, with strong project management skills, and demonstrate the highest standards of written English and visual communication.

  • Animation skills and some knowledge of D3.js/HTML5/CSS3/JavaScript are a plus.

  • Must be an excellent communicator and team player and have the ability to coordinate graphics production with editors, reporters and the art staff.
