Product Designer, Texas Monthly

Job Description: Texas Monthly is seeking an experienced and enthusiastic digital product designer to join our growing product development team and help design the next generation of texasmonthly.com and other digital platforms. Great design and user experience are key drivers to audience growth and engagement, and this role will be at the forefront of these business priorities.

The product team forges and creates the platforms that connect Texas Monthly’s award-winning content with our growing reader base. We’re eager problem-solvers and visionaries who can transform ideas into successful products with meaningful business outcomes. As the lead product designer, you will play a vital part in the design process, crafting designs that support readers, the editorial voice of Texas Monthly, and the business – turning strategy and insights into beautifully designed products and experiences. You’ll also activate ideas and opportunities and solve problems by prototyping design solutions before and after they are built in both iterative and transformative practices.

Job responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Collaborate on projects spanning a broad range, including site-wide responsive-template designs, homepage redesigns, special editorial features, rebranding of verticals, inline touts, creative ad templates, landing pages, and subscription-related flows

  • Work through design problems from beginning to end to post-launch iteration: translating research and data insights into ideas that form disruptive new products and features, then sketching and prototyping these ideas to quickly assess viability, and design detailed interaction behaviors

  • Own and evolve our design system and language across all digital platforms while supporting brand consistency and expression that is context appropriate

  • Evaluate the success of existing products and features, and develop designs to support business objectives

  • Maintain other responsibilities as needed

Successful candidates will possess the following skills/abilities:

  • You’re a great communicator. You have the communication skills to help set up frameworks and brainstorm initial design concepts. You also have the ability to mentor others to deliver work, and make experiences come to life

  • You are respectful when challenging assumptions and give and receive feedback with equal grace

  • You’re comfortable working autonomously and overseeing your design from beginning to end, but also equally comfortable in a collaborative environment, and willing to work with other team members when necessary

  • Excellent knowledge of the technologies used to build modern digital experiences

Job Requirements:

  • 4-7 years of visual/product design experience, preferably in digital media. Editorial experience is a plus

  • Degree in Visual Design, Graphic Design, Interaction Design, Industrial Design, Motion, Fine Art, Architecture, HCI or related field of study (or comparable work experience without a degree)

  • Demonstrated excellence in typography knowledge and skills, experience with complex typographical systems and hierarchies

  • The ability to create design systems that are scalable and have cross-platform compatibility

  • User-focused design mentality

  • Well-rounded understanding of information architecture

  • UX, UI, research, storytelling and design process which showcases projects from beginning to end

  • Excellent understanding of practices in art direction, illustration, photography, art, image making
