Freelance Magazine Designer, Phillips Exeter Academy
Job Description: Phillips Exeter Academy seeks an experienced freelance editorial designer with a passion for storytelling to spearhead the quarterly production of the school's flagship alumni magazine.
As the lead designer of The Exeter Bulletin, you will play a pivotal role in the magazine-making process from ideation to layout and will work both independently and collaboratively with the Academy’s in-house team of editors, writers, photographers and designers.
This position does not require working out of our New Hampshire offices, but does require being available for meetings and collaborative work as necessary during standard business hours (8am-5pm EST).
Responsibilities:
Art direct and design the editorial layout of the magazine (front-of-book, feature well and back-of-book), utilizing established page templates and styles to maintain consistency while pushing creative boundaries to enhance the magazine’s content and stay fresh and current.
Assist in sourcing, commissioning, and/or creating artwork for the magazine. This includes but is not limited to illustrations, infographics, icons and animations.
Play a key role in the print publication process including packaging of files, communication with the printer, use of online software to review digital proofs, and review of hardcopy proofs.
Work with the Academy’s web team to assist in translation of each issue’s content to digital publication on the website.
Work with The Exeter’s Bulletin’s photo editor to conduct photo research, assign shoots and license photography.
Work closely with the magazine’s editor, writers, class notes coordinator, designers, and other Academy staff as necessary.
Stay abreast of current trends in magazine publishing, sharing new ideas and insights
Job Requirements:
Ideal candidates will possess the following:
Passion for visual storytelling
A strong portfolio of print and digital design.
Excellent typography, layout and conceptual design skills with a thorough understanding of visual hierarchy
Photo color correction and retouching skills
Thorough understanding of print publication and digital design processes and technical knowledge of print production
Strong attention to detail and high standard of quality
Ability to maintain clean, organized design files and demonstrate strong organizational and time-management skills.
Demonstrated experience commissioning original artwork, working with editorial/conceptual illustrators, and the ability to art direct illustrations
Familiarity with the use of stock agencies and obtaining permission/licensing for visual assets
Ability to work in a highly-collaborative work environment
Ability to accept feedback and effectively communicate ideas and thought processes both verbally and in writing.
Illustration or animation capabilities are a plus.
Experience working in WordPress is ideal, but not required.
Required Qualifications
A bachelor’s degree in graphic design or related visual arts field
At least 5 years of experience in print editorial design
Expect knowledge of Adobe Creative Suite (InDesign, InCopy, Illustrator, Photoshop) and in particular, the InDesign/InCopy workflow.
