Deputy Art Director, Rachael Ray Magazine and Reveal Magazine (Property Brothers)

Job Description: This is a #2 position that will bridge both titles for Reveal magazine and Rachael Ray magazine quarterly titles.

Job Requirements:
I. Job Summary | Major goals and objectives
Meredith Corporation is seeking a Deputy Art Director to join its creative team to design content across titles including the Rachael Ray and Property Brothers magazines. This position conceptualizes and designs the content of the magazine under the direction of the Creative Director. The Deputy AD utilizes an understanding of the visual direction of magazines to make choices that maintain the creative vision, brand, and standard of quality. This position interacts with editors and the photography departments in addition to many outside freelance creatives.

II. Essential Job Functions
Accountabilities, Actions and Expected Measurable Results
60% - Designs and conceives assigned pages each month in cooperation with the assigning editor and Creative Director and Editor in Chief.
30% - Works with illustrators, photographers, and stylists, as appropriate. Attends photo shoots as needed.
10% - Evaluates quality of page proofs , handles some production duties , interfaces with copy editors and editors to ensure type specifications are consistent and the copy fits and visually tells the story.

III. Minimum Qualifications and Job Requirements | All must be met to be considered.
Education: Bachelor’s degree in Fine Arts, Graphic Design or related field, or equivalent training and/or experience.
Experience:

  • Minimum of five years experience in publication design.

  • Specific Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Expertise in Graphic Design, typography and concept development.

  • Knowledge of photographers, illustrators, and stylists.

  • Good computer skills, knowledge of production duties including attaching text, routing pages, shipping files

  • Expertise in editorial design and continuity.

  • Experience with photo shoots and on-set art direction.

  • Understanding of color correction/retouching process.

  • Ability to maintain high quality standards under tight deadlines.

  • Ability to communicate visual concepts to people who are not necessarily visually directed.

  • Excellent interpersonal, communication and multi-tasking skills.

% Travel Required (Approximate): 10 (to shoots)
