Assistant Art Director, AARP
Job Description: AARP publications is looking for an Assistant Art Director with editorial experience to work on department and feature designs for AARP The Magazine, AARP Bulletin and our rapidly growing digital newsletters. AARP The Magazine is the No. 1 read magazine in the country, and the Assistant AD will be part of a creative team driven to do ambitious visual work that breaks stereotypes of what it means to age. Must be a self-starter, eager, with the desire and ability to craft the smallest of sidebars to multi-part feature packages. Candidates should have the skills to pivot from project to project; for example, designing an editorial layout, creating a social media graphic, commissioning an illustration, cleaning up a file for shipping etc., on any given day.
Responsibilities and skills:
• Conceptualize and design print department and feature layouts. Experience with feature package design and stories with multiple hierarchies. Will design across all publication creative channels, including digital channels.
• Broad knowledge of editorial illustration, and experience assigning and giving art direction to illustrators.
• Work with photo editors to offer input and art direction on photo shoots and photo-research requests.
• Ability to multitask varied assignments independently in a very fast-paced environment, meet deadlines for multiple publications, and create priorities based on the workflow and closing schedules.
• Must be able to work independently, and also collaborate with the creative team and editors to execute the vision of the senior design staff.
Job Requirements:
• Completion of a Bachelor’s degree in Art and Design and 5 years of experience; or an equivalent combination of training and experience related to the duties of the position.
• Proficient in Adobe CC—InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator
• Experience at a national publication
• Online portfolio of work
• Experience with After Effects, Sketch/Figma
