A2-A3, Staff Editor, News Design, The New York Times

Job Description: The New York Times Print Hub is looking for a news designer to join its award-winning design team with a focus on the A2/A3 front-of-book section and Times Insider. These pages offer print readers an engaging daily round up of what’s going on in the world of The New York Times: the contents of the print paper; highlights from video, audio, live journalism, and social media; and behind-the-scenes insights into how Times journalism comes together.

The Times is looking for a news designer passionate about editorial design and storytelling to help tell the story of The Times report. This designer must be comfortable working across the company to coordinate art needs, reaching out to art directors, photo editors, and visual editors around the newsroom. The ideal candidate is a clear and efficient communicator with strong attention to detail.

This designer will work closely with the A2/A3 editorial team to design the front-of-book section of the daily newspaper and Times Insider. They will:

  • Design and assign illustration for the A2/A3 front-of-book section, including the daily newspaper spot illustration, the weekly artist-driven Sketchbook features, and Times Insider.

  • Assist in the ongoing editorial and design development of the pages.

  • Coordinate photo requests across desks.

  • Assign original illustration and photo illustration.

  • Create original artwork/photo illustration, as needed.

This position is represented by the NewsGuild of NY.

Job Requirements:

  • 2+ years of editorial design experience.

  • A portfolio of story-driven work that demonstrates strong visual and design skills — a clear grasp of typography, layout and color — and experience commissioning and working with provided editorial illustration and photography.

  • Has experience with selecting, editing, revising, adapting, and preparing imagery for press. Comfortable working in black and white.

  • Attention to detail and excellent written and oral communication skills.

  • Ability to meet deadlines and to adapt to a sometimes unpredictable production environment.

  • Ability to collaborate with colleagues of different backgrounds and widely-ranging technical levels.

  • Familiarity with competitors and also the new challenges and opportunities created by the changing media landscape.

  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and in a team environment in a fast-moving, deadline-oriented workplace.

  • Willingness to work a flexible schedule that may occasionally include nights or weekends.
